Cult Film Club returns with the 1987 action classic, Robocop, from acclaimed director Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall). Detroit – in the future – is crime-ridden, dystopian and run by the monolithic Omni Consumer Products. Out of desperation, the city signs a deal to let OCP run the police force. Hoping to use technology to create a mechanised robot, instead it malfunctions and kills an innocent, sparking public outrage. The company sees a way to get back in favor with the public when policeman Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is killed by a street gang. Murphy’s body is reconstructed within a steel shell and called RoboCop. Leading a brutally efficient campaign against crime, but plagued by memories of his past life, Robocop becomes the prime target of the sinister Dick Jones (Ronnie Cox) and Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith).
We are delighted to screen this film in partnership with the University of Northampton.
