Powerful, funny and highly original, Mouthpiece depicts the conflicted psyche of fiercely independent millennial Cass, who is ingeniously portrayed by two actresses in tandem (Norah Sadava, Amy Nostbakken).
Cass is a single writer who lives by her own rules. She’s also a bit of a disaster. Following the sudden death of her mother, Elaine (Maev Beaty), she finds herself in crisis – unable to think straight as she wrestles with the conflicting memories, emotions and debates raging inside her head.
Despite her family’s reservations, Cass insists on delivering the eulogy at her mother’s funeral. But how can she do justice to her mother’s life?
What unfolds is a wild careening through cross-generational grief, anger, sex and self-sabotage. Raucous jokes, musical numbers and heart-breaking nostalgia add up to a deeply moving and political portrait of a mother and a daughter as seen through the eyes of one conflicted young woman.
