Screening as part of HeadFest 22, Mary and Max is the moving animation, starring the unparalleled voice talents of the late-great Philip Seymour Hoffman alongside Toni Collette.

In this stop-motion dark comedy drama, Adam Elliot‘s indelible film follows the lives and friendship of two unlikely pen-pals; Mary (Collette), a small lonely Australian girl, and Max (Hoffman), an older Autistic American, with an array of mental and social problems.

Spanning more than twenty years, the film chronicles the unlikely best friends while they deal with the trials of their daily lives, affected by Mary’s alcoholic, neglectful mother, and Max’s inability to form bonds with other people.

Funny, dark and impossible to forget, Mary and Max is a gem.

Please note, this film features a scene in which a character attempts to kill themself
