The award-winning Malmkrog, directed masterfully by acclaimed filmmaker Cristi Puiu (The Death of Mr Lazarescu), is a provocative and engrossing historical drama, set in the confines of an ornate 19th century manor house.

A politician, a young countess, a general and his wife arrive at the mansion of an aristocratic landowner over the Christmas holidays. They converse and dine, indulge in parlour games and discuss politics, progress, morality and death.

But the mood grows tense as the debate becomes more heated and cultural differences become increasingly apparent. As the guests ruminate at length, we find ourselves wrapped in their confounding opinions, prescient dilemmas, dazzling wordplay and unexpected clashes. Ultimately, everyone will become a victim of their own discourse.

Elegantly staged and beautifully acted, with first rate performances from an ensemble cast, the film recalls the drawing room masterworks of Max Ophüls, and the stark cerebral work of Ingmar Bergman.

A challenging, rewarding and unique mixture of Downton Abbey and Dostoevsky, your mind will be all the richer for watching it.
