In director Zeina Durra‘s contemplative character study, Luxor, British aid worker Hana (Andrea Riseborough, Birdman) returns to the eponymous ancient city seeking mental peace and physical respite. After a difficult stint treating victims wounded in the Syrian war, she plans to find solace and nostalgia in the city where she spent her 20s.
But her plans are thrown off when she comes across Sultan (Karim Saleh, Transparent), a talented archeologist and her former lover. When they reconnect, their chemistry is undeniable. Yet, as she wanders the majestic city, delicately captured in soft, subdued tones, Hana is haunted by both her memories of this familiar place as well as the decisions she made many years before that led her to this moment.
An intimate and moving romance, Riseborough shines as the playful but pensive aid worker, grappling with grief and the impact of the war, while longing to forge a long-term intimate connection.
