Love Child is the epic love story of Iranian couple Leila and Sahand, who fell for one another while still married to other people. Fearing for their own lives, as well as their son, Mani, they are forced to flee their home country, where adultery and illegitimate children are considered crimes, punishable by death. They begin their new life in Turkey, but dream of seeking asylum in Canada or the United States.
Eva Mulvad‘s intimate and affecting documentary follows the family over six years, closely capturing the dramatic highs and lows of their quest to live safely together as a family. But against the battles of asylum law and their guilt for leaving loved ones behind, the couple’s commitment to seeking a better life for their son, as well as their devotion to one another, offers a shining light of humanity. Through its effective editing and sweeping narrative, it’s easy to forget Love Child is not a work of fiction, but this is a true story and that makes Leila and Sahand’s journey even more powerful.
