Academy-Award nominee Sally Hawkins dazzles in writer/director Craig Roberts‘ second feature, Eternal Beauty. Deeply moving and very funny, Eternal Beauty deftly captures the life of Jane (Hawkins), a paranoid schizophrenic and unsuccessful beauty queen who has been at the mercy of her cruel mother (Penelope Wilton), self-absorbed sister (Billie Piper) and medication for most of her life.
Still reeling from the shock of being left at the altar many years before, Jane (played in her younger years by Morfydd Clark) is trapped in an unstable cycle, which sees her regular spiralling out of control as the voices in her head take over the radio and TV. When love, both real and imagined, collides with her family relationships, the consequences are both touching and humorous. Set against a stylish backdrop, Eternal Beauty is an unconventional and profound exploration of mental illness, with outstanding performances and a stellar supporting cast, including David Thewlis and Alice Lowe.
