Starring Dakota FanningEmma Thompson and David SuchetEffie Gray is the true story of a scandal that shocked Victorian England.

Nineteen-year-old Effie Gray (Fanning) marries esteemed art critic John Ruskin (Greg Wise), a cold and distant man who, seemingly repelled by his young bride, refuses to consummate their marriage. Neglected and shunned, Effie’s health begins to suffer from the strain of the crumbling relationship.

She decides to defy Victorian society and strike up a friendship with one of Ruskin’s acolytes, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood painter John Everett Millais (Tom Sturridge). Soon, their friendship blossoms into something else, sending shockwaves through polite society.

Directed by BAFTA-Award winner Richard Laxton (Him & Her), and written by and co-starring Oscar-winning script writer and actress Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility, Howard’s End), the film is exquisitely made, with a witty and acerbic script exploring Victorian social and sexual mores.

Effie Gray is a sumptuous treat, that will delight fans of Rebecca, Bridgerton and Pride and Prejudice.
