Piotr Adamski‘s award-winning debut film, Eastern, catapults us into a dystopian world governed by an inescapable patriarchal code. Boldly wearing its Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth) and Athina Rachel Tsangari (Chevalier) influences on its blood-tinged sleeves, this gripping thriller unexpectedly twists and turns in thoroughly enjoyable ways, while offering a metaphor for modern-day Polish politics.

Behind the fences of a gated community, a singular game is being played out. For years, the Nowak and Kowalski families have been embroiled in a vendetta governed by the cyclical law of blood and honour. When the Nowaks’ son dies at the hand of Klara Kowalska (Paulina Krzyzanska), his nineteen-year-old sister, Ewa (Maja Pankiewicz), is chosen by their father (Marcin Czarnik) to avenge his death. Pressured by her family and the community of residents, she starts to hunt Klara. But when the confrontation occurs, Ewa is faced with a choice between carrying out revenge in the name of honour, and perpetuating the bloody vendetta which will eventually claim her, or pursuing her own freedom.
