Northampton Film Festival 2022 is delighted to present a screening of Benediction.

The latest, heart-breaking film from Terence Davies (Distant Voices, Still LivesSunset Song) is a delicate portrait of poet Siegfried Sassoon.

A complex man who survived the horrors of the First World War, Sassoon (Jack Lowden/Peter Capaldi), was a decorated soldier, whose bravery on the battlefield evolved into courage of a different kind, as he became a vocal critic of the government’s continuation of the war.

Legendary still today for his poetry inspired by experiences on the Western Front, Sassoon was adored by both members of the aristocracy, as well as stars of London’s literary and theatre scene.

As he embarked on affairs with several high-profile men (including Ivor Novello), he attempted to come to terms with his homosexuality.

But, broken by the horrors of war, his life’s journey became a quest for salvation.
